            NeuroMuscular Realignment (NMR)

* Before you schedule your NMR session it is important that you know that this is
NOT A MASSAGE SESSION.
Though a few massage techniques may be used, this method mostly involves specialized stretches.

Your musculoskeletal system is an integrated series of pulleys and levers.  Therefore the source of your pain is not always the source of your problem.  Often times, pain in one area is caused by a dysfunctional muscle on the other side of the body.  The easiest example of this is when tight and shortened Pectoral (chest) muscles pull your shoulders forward, overstretching your Rhomboid and Trapezius muscles, causing pain in your shoulders and upper back.

This holistic view of the body informs our entire approach to bodywork and massage.  However, NeuroMuscular Realignment (NMR) involves more than the surface muscles.

Massaging the muscles closest to the skin can relieve pain and have many other benefits.  But if your core muscles are pulling your skeleton out of alignment, the pain will return in short order.  Some therapists will try to use trigger point therapy on the Psoas and other core muscles, but this can be extremely painful and is often ineffective.  NMR primarily combines assisted stretches, Muscle Energy Technique (MET), Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), Reciprocal Inhibition, and Positional Release with cross-fiber friction and/or Myofascial Release.  It is commonly performed with the patient fully or partially clothed (yoga or loose-fitted work-out clothes are ideal), but it can also be performed with the patient unclothed and fully draped.

NMR is done in 90 minute sessions, to allow for proper assessment, releasing the 3 primary core muscles (Psoas, Abdominus, and Quadratus Lumborum), balancing and relaxing the neck, aligning the hips, and correcting any spinal rotations (with gentle stretches, not Chiropractic adjustments).  Because we're working with muscles in order to realign the skeletal structure rather than quickly "popping" or "cracking" joints back into place, this method requires slow and gentle bodywork, which takes more time.

When joints are out of place due to sudden injuries, quickly popping the joints back into place is often very helpful.  However, many postural misalignments occur over years of improper body positioning and unbalanced movements that cause certain muscles to get locked into contraction.  in such cases, if you only pop the joint back into place, the contracted muscles will still be locked into contraction and will pull the joint right back out of alignment.  Therefore, it is often much more effective to treat the muscles causing the misalignments.  Treating the cause, rather than the symptoms, is the essence of why Neuromuscular Realignment is so effective at eliminating chronic pain.

NMR is especially helpful with chronic pain conditions like:

·Sciatica

·Low Back Pain

·Headaches / Migraines

·Spinal Rotations

·Scoliosis

·Misdiagnosed Fibromyalgia

·Short Leg Syndrome

·Repetitive Motion Injuries (carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, golf injuries, etc.)
